The only credit card rule that matters

Every credit card horror story breaks the same rule. Every success story follows it.

One rule. Follow it and cards work for you; break it and they work against you.

The rule

Pay the full statement balance by the due date. Every month. That's it — the entire system in one sentence.

Interest only exists on balances you carry past the due date. Pay in full and the APR printed on the card is irrelevant to you — it could say 9% or 29% and your cost would be identical: zero. The card becomes a payment method with benefits attached, behaving exactly like debit except it pays you.

Automate it

Willpower is unreliable; autopay isn't. Set every card to autopay the full statement balance from your checking account, and the rule enforces itself. You'll still review statements — automation doesn't mean abdication — but the default outcome becomes success instead of a missed payment.

Pair it with alerts: a text for every charge over a threshold you set, and a heads-up a few days before the autopay pulls. Two minutes of setup, permanent peace of mind.

Spend what you have

The card is a payment method, not extra money. Budget exactly as you would with debit: if the checking account can't cover it, the card doesn't buy it. People get in trouble when the credit limit starts feeling like income.

A simple guardrail: check your running card total once a week, the way you'd glance at a checking balance. If the number ever makes you flinch, that's the budget talking — listen to it.

If you slip

One month of interest isn't ruin — it's tuition. Pay the balance down, figure out what broke (forgotten autopay? overspending?), fix that one thing, and get back on the rule. The system is forgiving of a stumble; it's only fatal if you quit.

What you must not do is shrug and start carrying balances routinely. That's the slide from “tool” to “trap,” and it's always gradual until it isn't.

The royal rule:

Never pay interest. Collect everything.
